Kelly Rowland - Biography

Kelly Rowland rose to fame with the success of Destiny's Child during the late '90s. During that time, Destiny's Child catapulted into the new millennium as one of the best-selling female musical groups in history. Rowland, who was barely in her twenties, had been imagining such stardom for a long time. Born and raised in Atlanta, GA, Rowland began singing as soon as she heard the vocal beauty of Whitney Houston. She was only four at the time, but Houston's 1985 self-titled debut was enough to motivate the little girl. Performances with the church choir followed, but Rowland's developing interest in music blossomed when she and her family moved to Houston, TX. She befriended another inspiring singer, Beyoncé Knowles, and the two became fast friends. In the mid-'90s, the two girls formed Destiny's Child. Destiny's Child made an impressive debut in 1997 with first single "No No No"; their self-titled full-length followed the next winter and went platinum before the year's end. Two more albums followed -- The Writing's on the Wall (1999) and Survivor (2001) -- earning Destiny's Child countless fans across the globe as well as millions of records sold. Upon the success of Survivor, Rowland followed her bandmates in taking some time off. During that time, Rowland began writing material for her first solo album. In 2002, Rowland's stylish R&B solo debut, Simply Deep, was released on Columbia. "Dilemma," the album's first single, featured a duet with Southern rapper Nelly. It had a two-month stay at number one during fall 2002. Her second solo album, the oft-delayed and more R&B-oriented Ms. Kelly, didn't materialize until July 2007.

Kelly Rowland - Ms. Kelly Review & Sexy King Magazine flashback
(Photos: King Magazine, 2005)
Kelly Rowland
Ms. Kelly
Release Date: July 03, 2007
Label: RCA
(Allmusicguide.com)
Kelly Rowland's second solo album was, at one point, due to be released in 2006, titled My Story. Before it was released, Rowland had a change of heart, deciding that the material was too ballad and midtempo-oriented, and she told interviewers that it "would have made people cry." So, she switched it up a little, sought out some different producers, and adjusted the album's makeup. Even without this knowledge, Ms. Kelly sounds like an album where Rowland is mostly sorting through some deeply personal relationship issues with a couple relatively lighthearted songs thrown in for variety. Unless close attention is paid to the drastic and fleeting shifts in subject matter, the conscious decision to release an album not completely sad/bitter/angry/regretful/at peace and autobiographical isn't completely apparent. The lyrics within the most personal songs are direct and specific, going beyond basic breakup material, so those who aren't going through something similar might have some difficulty connecting with them. All-around, the album does provide a stronger set of songs than 2002's Simply Deep. The material tends to be kind of insidious, rather than hitting you immediately or going through one ear and out the other, and it's significantly more R&B-oriented, as opposed to Simply Deep's adult alternative rock leanings. Kelly Rowland Upskirt performance Pictures(09-06-2007) & Billboard CD review
ARTIST: KELLY ROWLAND
ALBUM: MS. KELLY (Columbia Records/Sony Urban)
Former Destiny's Child songstress Kelly Rowland may never upstage her superstar groupmate Beyonce, but she certainly has the vocal chops and charm to stand on her own stiletto-clad feet. Consider the aptly titled "Ms. Kelly" her proper mission statement. Compared with her gospel-fueled 2002 solo debut, "Simply Deep," Rowland appears confident and dominant on foot-stompers like "Come Back" and the Eve-assisted single "Like This." These whiplash-inducing tunes fit like jigsaw pieces beside relationship-driven ballads ("Better Without You") and midtempo cuts ("Ghetto" featuring Snoop Dogg) that showcase her come-hither pipes. In true Destiny's Child fashion, Rowland teeters between coy and naughty, often in the same whispery breath. Though still short of career-defining, "Ms. Kelly" finds its author opening up more while welcoming the possibility that destiny may just find another star.
